    Common Questions

    Restorative Dentistry FAQ

What's the difference between a filling and a crown?
A filling restores a portion of a tooth damaged by decay. A crown covers the entire visible tooth and is needed when decay is extensive, a tooth is cracked, or after a root canal.
How long do dental crowns last?
With proper care, porcelain crowns typically last 10–20 years. All-ceramic crowns are highly durable and stain-resistant with regular dental hygiene.
Are tooth-colored fillings as strong as silver?
Modern composite resin fillings are extremely durable and bond directly to the tooth — often requiring less tooth removal than amalgam. They're our preferred material for most restorations.
    What is full-mouth reconstruction?
Full-mouth reconstruction addresses multiple damaged or missing teeth simultaneously — often combining crowns, implants, bridges, and cosmetic treatments to completely rebuild your smile.
How do I know if I need a crown or a filling?
We'll tell you clearly at your examination. Generally: if decay or damage affects less than half the tooth, a filling works. More than that, or if the tooth is cracked, a crown protects it fully.
    Does insurance cover restorative dentistry?
Most PPO plans cover basic restorations (fillings) at 80% and major restorations (crowns) at 50% after deductible. Our team verifies your exact coverage before any treatment.
